Genius

I once read a series called the "Genius Wars". It was great. There's very few books that include anything computer-related, and there's very few that include anything that's not first grade level computer stuff. This book suited me perfectly, but there was one part that I loved because it described me so much, and made me hate myself.

It was a point in the book where Cadel (the main character, who happens to be an amazingly genius teenage hacker) was feeling particularly sad because he was pretty antisocial. In the bathroom, there were two boys trying to make a small bomb out of something (nothing serious, something that would explode and liquid would fly everywhere). Cadel then showed them how to make it 10 times better. He should have just walked away and accepted that geniuses are not accepted in society. Instead, he basked in the glory of having impressed two people who were far less smart than him, and whose opinion would mean nothing to him for the rest of his life. So, while he was basking in this social acceptance/impressiveness, he realized that he could just keep impressing people and he would be socially accepted for the rest of his life. After he talked to his psychologist about it (who happened to be the protagonist, but also Cadel's father... it's a REALLY good story), his psychologist told him that true geniuses are not accepted in society, because no one understands them properly.

I feel the same way about geeks. Even nerds (yes, there is a DIFFERENCE) have their own little society. Geeks? They're few and far apart (at least, in my age/year/place/life), so there's no group. Geeks are the ones who have spent their whole lives online. I know a few semi-geeks at my school, but gamers don't count. Gamers are the ones who yell "l0l n00b!" at their screen after dying 4 times in a row in Black Ops. 13 year old gamers are the worst kinds of people to deal with. 13 year old PC gamers are a little more acceptable, but they need to have memorized the Fibonacci Sequence up to at least 144, pi to at least 3.141592653589, or semi-know a programming language and how to use it. Otherwise, they're unbearable too. Where was I...? Oh, yeah.

I know no real geeks at my school. I know wannabe geeks, I know /b/ros, I know gamers, nerds, etc. but no geeks. No one who can program, no one who enjoys a computer challenge, no one who has ever encrypted anything in BASE64, no one who has used a keylogger (sorry!), no one who knows what RAM is/does, no one who can tell what 1000 is in binary, etc. I'm not trying to say I'm the only geek, but what I'm insinuating or implying is that I AM THE ONLY GEEK.

Therefore, my level of social acceptance is really low unless I start basking in those moments when I impress people. I hate impressing people though, because then
  1. They take you for granted sometimes. Oh yeah, he did that one cool thing, but he can't do anymore.
  2. You start making a name for yourself, but you're still just that one kid who can do that one thing with the computer thingy
  3. I realize, "Hey. This will mean nothing to me next week, next month, next year, next decade, etc. It only means something to me in this moment. Why am I trying to impress this stranger again...?"
  4. Then I realize, "Oh, it's because there's no other way I can bring up a conversation with anyone because they talk about stuff like sports/normal people things and I just say "...k."
  5. Then I realize, "If we had a geek here, I could talk about anything/everything to them, but we don't, so I can't."
So, yeah. Basically my points are these:
  • Social acceptance
  • it's fucking HARD if you're a geek

Piracy

Here are my thoughts on piracy. First off, I talked about .9999999999... = 1 earlier. Because it DOES. Here: (click the image to read the stuff, I suck at resizing with HTML because I don't know what size everything is exactly. w00t. Got the resizing down perfectly.)

Saw that on the interwebs (/b/, but I'm breaking the first rule by talking about it so I'll stop). It's so awesome. I asked that to my math teacher in 7th grade and she said "lol idk". It angered me. Math teachers, not knowing the answer to a simple math question? So I Googled it. Take that, Mrs. Gill. Anyways, back on topic. Piracy.

Piracy is fine by me. Well, obviously it's gonna be, because I'm 13 and I've never had anything I've created be pirated before. Seriously, though: here's my view on it. If I have $10 on me and I walk into a store, and I walk out with $10 and a video game, I stole it. It's either that, or I somehow found a free video game or a video game that costs $50 and I found a $50 bill on the floor. So, I walk in with the intent of stealing, and I steal something. That is stealing.

Now, here's a different scenario. I want to watch a show. For argument's sake, we'll say I want to watch Legend of Korra.
  1. I'm not torrenting it so I can watch it without commercials. I have a fast forward button on my remote!
  2. If it's not on and I don't have it recorded, I wouldn't be able to watch it at the moment anyways.
So, I torrent it. There is a copyright law that I'm breaking, but I don't want to wait half a week to watch a show that is fully available online.

Another scenario? Sure! I want to play a video game. Maybe, Minecraft. (Note: I hate this game, but I've played it. Look at my previous posts.)
  1. I torrent it because I don't have $30 on me anyways.
  2. I torrent it because even if I did have $30, I would buy something else with it (when I awoke, I spent that on a necklace (brownie points if you got the reference (these are a lot of open parentheses, I'm gonna have to close all of these soon (holy shit ((((())))))))) (by the way, I counted all the parentheses, that's actually the exact amount of parentheses needed for equality, I didn't guess. An unended paren is srs bznss)
  3. I don't torrent it with the intent of stealing. If I don't have $30 on me to begin with, then I wouldn't be able to buy it. If my age group is the target age group for minecraft and none of us torrented it, we wouldn't like it. If we didn't like it, we wouldn't buy it.
  4. To defend on people torrenting, I think people should just use "free versions" or "free demos" more often. Time-limited vs Feature-limited is another issue that pops up over there, though. Alas, that is a topic for another blog post.
So yeah. I torrent. @ anyone who reads this and has made a movie or game or paid software or something: I'm sorry. (although if you're making paid software, I hate you. Make open-source software and put ads on the site or something!) Chances are, if you've made something and I absolutely needed/wanted it, I've torrented it. Again. I'm sorry.

I really need to start signing my blog posts or something, it feels kinda empty down here (especially because I suck at concluding posts).

Antisocial

So, this really popular person had a party at school. Naturally, I wasn't invited. I didn't expect to be. My friends were; that made me a bit sad. It sucks to be the guy who sits at home playing League of Legends rather than enjoying with friends. I'm kind of an extroverted geek, in my opinion. I like to go to parties, but only parties with people who have the same interests as me. That makes it kind of hard to go to parties... (/humor). The real kicker, the reason I'm sad, the reason I'm making this post, is that tonight, I looked out a window and saw the Big Dipper. No big deal, right? Well, after the party was over everyone got on facebook and talked about how the nerds at the party (not me) all showed the other people the Big Dipper in the sky. I don't know why, but as soon as I saw that I got really sad. I saw the Big Dipper, too! But I saw it at home while playing video games. Something tells me I need to be less antisocial.

Hello, World

First post. I made this blog because of inspiration. It's 2:32 AM right now. My inspiration to make a blog:
-Watching The Social Network.
-MIT Admissions Blogs
-Being up late at night
-Having a place I can dump all my thoughts into
-Having a place safe from people in my school
-I'm sick of Twitter's micro-blogging format in which you can only use 140 characters to express your thoughts.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. I just hit 80 WPM last night, too. That's kind of a part of it, I guess. It's not a reason for making the blog, but it's a plus. I don't know if this blog is an in-the-moment thing or if it's gonna be something I take with me through high school and college, and I hopefully I can make it better by learning HTML and stuff. For now, I'm sticking to learning JavaScript, but I waver a lot with learning languages. I was learning Python a week and a half ago. My first language that I ever tried was C++. I failed at it. I then did a bit of Batch (@echo off stuff) and HTML. I don't remember much of anything from HTML besides <p> and </p>. Or is that just because I watched The Social Network? Hmm. (Funny thing I just noticed: typing < or > in Google's simple blog posting shows "&lt;" or "&gt;" in HTML. Maybe if I ever learn HTML I'll know more about that.

I'm NOT going to update this blog regularly. I don't even know if I'll update it at all. I'm not good with sticking to schedules. Inconsistency is my middle name. I don't want it to feel like, "Ugh. Time to update my blog." I want it to be something more like, "Wow. That was interesting. I'm gonna blog about that."

//there used to be a paragraph here, but my mind is controversial so I backspace a lot. I don't like it.

Anyways, welcome to my blog. :)
